10 reasons why it’s better to be bipolar

Weeqender: Van Gogh is Bipolar Cafe-Living Art Space

If cafe owner, artist and filmmaker Jethro B. Rafael is to be believed, being a bipolar is actually a good thing.

Take him and his relatively new venture for example. Rafael was diagnosed to be clinically bipolar (we prefer this word over disorder), a condition that may have made life a bit difficult for him. But as any great person would do, he turned his condition to a strength by showcasing his special diet for bipolars and non-bipolars alike. Thus, Van Gogh is Bipolar Cafe and Living Art Space is born.

Tucked inside a small apartment complex along Maginhawa Street in Quezon City, Van Gogh is Bipolar is a breather among the numerous cafes and restaurants that sprouted like mushroom in the city. For starters, from the outside, there’s no sign informing curious guests like us where the cafe may be, save for the printed rubber slipper hanging on the wall that says “open”. In fact, we even mistaken the next door Blacksoup Cafe-Art Gallery as Van Gogh is Bipolar, had not the the good-natured folks pointed us to the right place.

If you won’t feel welcome upon stepping inside, well, it’s not entirely your fault. Rafael admitted to being a bit choosy on who to let inside his cafe-gallery-abode, especially since he considers the place as his haven. Too discreet for someone in the service industry, you may think, but the cafe business is just a hobby for Rafael, it’s something that keeps him busy during the day and he prefers to spend the days with people he like. A valid reason, if you ask me.
