Driving up north is often a breeze if you take the North Luzon Expressway. Formerly known as the North Diversion Road, NLEX has better, smoother roads and more efficient toll system than the South Luzon Expressway, and such highway comfort comes with a (higher toll) price. See the table below for the rates.

Best time to travel: Anytime; traffic flow in NLEX is not as bad as that in South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).
Allowed speed: 80 to 100 kph
Length: 84 kms
Number of lanes per side: 3 to 5 lanes; 8 lanes upon approach to toll gates
Minimum Height Clearance on Underpasses: 4.27 m or 14 feet
Emergency phone booths: Yes
Water stations for vehicles: Yes
Towing system: Yes
CCTV monitoring: Yes
Speed guns: Yes
Rest rooms: Yes. There are rest rooms in all gas stations located along NLEX. All rest rooms have water but it’s best to bring your own roll of toilet paper.
Gas stations: Yes. From Balintawak exit to Santa Ines exit, there are three gas stations along NLEX with restaurants, food stalls, convenience store and rest rooms.
Balintawak to Santa Ines (northbound)
Petron (Km. 22) – after Meycauayan exit
Shell (Km. 31) – after Bocaue exit
Total (Km. 55) – after Pulilan exit and Candaba viaduct
Petron (Km. 70) – after San Fernando exit. Landmarks are the two malls seen from the highway, SM City Pampanga and Robinsons Starmills
Santa Ines to Balintawak (southbound)
Caltex (Km. 16) – after Lawang Bato exit
Petron (Km. 29) – after Tabang exit
Caltex (Km. 62) – after San Fernando exit
Shell (Km. 76) – after Angeles City exit
Food stalls/restaurants: Yes. You can choose from a variety of fast food and casual dining restaurants and food stalls found in gas stations.
Toll rates
Vehicles are classified into three classes and different rates apply per vehicle class.
Class 1 –Cars, jeepneys, pickups and vans
Class 2 – Two-axle trucks, buses and vans
Class 3 – Trucks and trailers with three or more axles
