Task Force Pride- Philippines | Pride March Manila 2009
Come December every year, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, queers and allies come together to march for our rights and our lives. In the Philippines, we celebrate Pride March every December instead of June, as the rest of the world does, simply to avoid rain on our parade, literally. June heralds the start of the six-month-long rainy season in the Philippines and while many of us want to be fab and beautiful for the parade, rain will spoil all preparations for the parade. So the parade was moved from June to December. On top of the Philippine pride march is Task Force Pride (TFP) Philippines, the official organizing network of the annual Pride March. Founded in 1999, TFP is composed of volunteer Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) organizations and individuals to promote positive visibility for the LGBT community. Every year, TFP collaborates with LGBT and LGBT-friendly groups to put together a celebration, before, during and after the pride march. Although there is a dispute on when the pride march really started (more on this next time), the LGBT community sets this aside to focus on the more important things, such as planning fabulous ways to celebrate pride! In support of Pride Manila 2009, WEEQENDER will post news, updates and the schedule of activities as announced by TFP 2009. Wherever you may be in the country, you can help celebrate LGBT pride by:
