Taipei, Taiwan – After staging the country’s first gay pride march in 2003 with an estimated 500 participants, Taiwan is breaking records in Asia after successfully holding a gay pride march dubbed “Love Out Loud! The Power of Love Conquers Discrimination” with 25,000 reported participants last October 31, 2009, according to CarnalNation.com.

The gay pride march took participants from Kaidagelan Boulevard, to Ai Guo W. Rd, Chunghua Rd, Hanko St., Guanchien Rd., Zhongxiao E. Rd., Gongyuan Rd and finally back to Kaidagelan Boulevard. The march was organized by the Taiwan LGBT Pride Community, “a coalition of LGBT and civil society organisations including Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association and Gender/Sexuality Rights Association, Taiwan”. Groups from Europe, USA and Japan also joined the march.

Aside from the highly-attended march, the activity also named Malaysian Chinese chanteuse Fish Leong (see photo on left) as the “Rainbow Ambassador” and was featured in the post-march Pride Concert along with Tony Fish.

It is said that Taiwan is among the more tolerant Asian countries on LGBTs. In 2003, the Taiwan cabinet drafted a pro-LGBT bill to legalize same-sex marriage and adoption. However, LGBTs in Taiwan need to wait before the bill is passed into a law. Taiwan is the first country in Asia to make a bill legalizing same-sex union and adoption rights.
