With the aspiration of using photography to promote international gay rights, the 14-month “Walk with Pride” project aims todocument over 30 parades around the globe, including this year’s 2009 Manila Pride March. Developed by photographer Charles Meacham and blogger Sarah Baxter, “Walk with Pride” takes advantage of social media technologies to link viewers, and to encourage greater awareness and involvement on the issues surrounding gay rights.
The idea for the project was sparked following recent debates on gay rights issues, and after attending the 2009 Taipei pride event, one of the largest LGBT parades in Asia. While the imagery displayed on the main project website celebrates the colorful atmosphere of the parades, the accompanying blog centers on the main issues and stories behind the marches. While their foremost aim with the project is to encourage international pride, they also hope to generate a greater concern by those outside the gay community regarding the subject of equal rights.

Some intended key stops on the project’s international journey include pride parades in Sydney, Tokyo, Moscow, Tel Aviv, New York, Toronto, San Francisco, Mumbai, and the largest pride parade in the world held in São Paulo, Brazil.
Charles Meacham has already completed several other culture-related photography projects, which has led to over 20 international photography awards, including those from National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, and PDN magazines. Previous writingprojects by Sarah Baxter have likewise been culturally focused, and have featured on the community pages of Lonely Planet.com, EthicalTraveler.org, and WildAsia.net.
Photos of the upcoming December 5 Manila Pride March will be posted the week following the event. Weeqender is a proud media partner of Walk with Pride project.
